Magnesium Oxide (MgO)

The oxide of magnesium, an ionic compound. In-room temperature, it is a white solid. Magnesium Oxide exists in the form of periclase in nature. The raw material of smelting magnesium.
Magnesium Oxide has good fire-resistant insulation. After sintering in around 1000℃, it will transform into a crystal. If the temperature rises to 1500~2000℃, it will become magnesite clinker or called sintered magnesium oxide.

Properties

Magnesium Oxide, also called bitter soil and MgO, alkaline oxide, cementitious material. White powder ( light yellow is magnesium nitride), odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic, a typical alkaline earth metal compound, its chemical formula is MgO. The melting point is 2852℃, the boiling point is 3600℃, relative density is 3.58(25℃). It can dissolve in acid and ammonium salt solution, but cannot dissolve in alcohol. The solubility in water is 0.00062 g/100 mL (0℃) and 0.0086 g/100mL (30℃). If it exposes to the air, it can easily absorb water and CO2 then it will become alkaline magnesium carbonate. In some conditions, it even generates magnesium hydroxide and shows the alkaline reaction. Saturated aqueous solution's pH is 10.3. In visible sight or in UV radius has strong refraction. Magnesite(MgCO3), dolomite(MgCO3 ‧ CaCO3), and seawater are the main materials that produce magnesium oxide. With thermal decomposition, we can get magnesium oxide from magnesite or dolomite. Treating water with slaked lime can generate precipitation magnesium hydroxide. Then, burned the magnesite hydroxide can get magnesium oxide. 

Species

Classification: It separates from lightweight and heavyweight magnesium oxide. The lightweight magnesium oxide's volume is a loose and white powder. Odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. Density is 3.58g/cm3. It's hard to dissolve in water and organic solvents. In water, the solubility will increase due to the CO2. It can dissolve in acid, ammonium salt solution. Transforming to crystals through high temperature sintered. If it contacts CO2 then it will become magnesium carbonate double salt. The heavyweight is tight volume, white and cream color powder. Easy to compound with water and east to absorb water and CO2 when it exposed in the air. Mixed with magnesium chloride would make it harden.

Application

Magnesium oxide's annual output is around 12 million tons. In order to measure the sulfur and pyrite in the coal or sulfur and arsenic in the steel. It can also use as standard white dye. Lightweight magnesium is mainly used to manufacturing ceramic, enamel, refractory crucible, and refractory brick. It can also be used as a polishing agent, adhesive, coating, paper filler, neoprene, and fluoro rubber accelerator or activator. After mixing with magnesium chloride solution, can made magnesium oxide water solution. In medical uses, can make it become antacid and laxative, and it can also use on glass, dyeing meal, and phenolic plastic manufacturing. The heavyweight magnesium oxide can apply on fire grinding and half drum in the rice milling industry. In the architecture industry, it can use to manufacturing artificial chemical floors, artificial marble heat shields, or the acoustic panel plastic industry. Magnesium oxide can also use to manufacture other magnesium salts.

One of the main purposes of magnesium oxide is flame retardant. The traditional flame-retardant material widely uses on halogen polymer or halogen flame retardant structure mixture. However, once there is a fire disaster, due to the thermal decomposition and combustion, magnesium oxide will produce lots of fog and toxic gas.
Will causes the problem of fighting fire and evacuates people. Moreover, it might corrupt the equipment and instrument.  Especially, people found that 80% of the fatal accidents were caused by toxic gas. Therefore, not only flame retardant efficiency but the low smoke and toxic content is an important indicator. The flame retardant industry in China, growing extremely imbalanced. Especially chlorinated paraffin is the most. But the emission of toxic gas isn't meet the life persuasion nowadays. Hence, in order to reduce the emission of toxic gas. The development of magnesium oxide flame retardant and manufacture is the primary goal.
